Although there are ways for same sex couples to publicly announce their commitment to one another there is still no legal equivalent to a heterosexual marriage under British law. On 18 November, 2004 the United Kingdm Parliament passed the Civil Partnership Act, which came into force in December 2005 and allows same-sex couples to register their partnership. The government stressed during the passage of the bill that it is not same-sex marriage, and some gay activists have criticized the act for not using the terminology of marriage. However, the rights and duties of partners under this legislation are almost exactly the same as for married couples.
Between December 21, 2005 and January 31, 2006, a remarkable 2,150 gay and 1,138 lesbian couples formed civil partnerships in England and Wales. Of those 3,288 ceremonies, the most publicized one of all was that of music legend Elton John and his Canadian-born partner David Furnish, who exchanged vows at 11 A.M. on December 21 at the historic Guildhall in Windsor, west of London—the very spot where Prince Charles wed Camilla Parker Bowles just eight months earlier.
