San Francisco

San Francisco Overview

When you think fashion, you think Milan; when you think theatre, you think Broadway in New York City; when you think gay, you think San Francisco. Hailed as the “Gay Mecca” of the world, San Fran has been flying the flag for more than 150 years (long before 1978 when it became the rainbow flag we know and love) and boasts one of the highest per capita gay populations in the world. Made only more popular by the Oscar winning performance of Sean Penn in Milk, the account of Harvey Milk as California’s first openly gay elected official, the Castro remains homo central for the Bay Area, with added hot spots like anything-goes SoMa (South of Market); guppie-laden Pacific Heights and lesbian-popular Noe Valley and the Mission.

Welcoming to seasoned traveler and fresh-off-the-bus types alike, San Francisco has long been top rated as a world travel hot spot by countless publications. And with 47 square miles of breathtaking landscape of hill, bay and fog; world-class restaurants and multicultural institutions to keep you engaged all day; vibrant neighborhoods, bars and clubs to keep you satisfied all night – are you surprised?! With so much to do in a city made manageable by great public transportation, friendly locals and agreeable weather, you’ll leave more than your heart behind in San Francisco – you’ll leave a reservation at that adorable little place on Market Street for when you come back!

Get Your Groove On

    Badlands

    4121 18th Street
    at Castro Street
    San Francisco

Badlands is the Castro’s most popular location for video/music entertainment and dancing. The dance floor features a state-of-the-art EAW-powered sound system, and colorful dance floor lighting. The front room lounge area is a great place to meet people or hang out with your friends and enjoy the music.

There ain’t no part like a West Coast party! For over 25 years, the Endup has kept the San Francisco nightlife torch alive with its all day all night weekend dance-a-thons. The Sunday afternoon gay dance is legendary.

    www.pilsnerinn.com
Over the past year the Pilsner has become tremendously popular with the 20-30-?ish beer-thirsty queer. Compound that with the current ban on smoking in bars and clubs and this quiet neighborhood bar with a fantastic outdoor garden has become a teeming hub of folks out to enjoy beer and the smoky-fresh air of the patio. The Pilsner is friendly – cruisey…no need to hide in a dark corner and leap on your prey…pour some of your pitcher into his/her glass and start talking. The bar has a large selection of draft beers that you can order by the pitcher and mini pitcher. Lots of pool, dart and pinball junkies of every sexuality hang out here.

The Haight isn’t so far from the Castro as one would think from their disparate cultures. Traxx is a good honest gay bar with a little mish mash of hipster, troll, nice guy and heavy-handed bartender. Party nights attract a fitter, faster crowd, but most nights you can count on a Bud Light, free popcorn and some mighty fine tv-watching.

This is definitely a conversation-oriented bar, and the huge floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the busiest street corner in the city give patrons plenty to talk about. Although the bar was originally started by two dykes, this place definitely sports a male crowd.

    Stud

    399 9th Street
    San Francisco, CA

Fawn at singing trannys, sweat to swirling beats and chug that rum and Coke. The Stud changes parties nightly but is always on target. Crowds of devilishly cute boys, kick ass ladies and nip-and-tuck gendernauts drink ’til blackout in this South of Market home.

Bath and Body

    Blow Buddies

The name of this internationally known sex club pretty much says it all. Blow Buddies is the place for sex of the safest variety, and its maze of glory holes are safe and active late into the night and early morning hours.

    Eros

Many an innocent lad has wandered into this two-floor sex palace after stumbling out of the nearby bars that line Church, Market and Castro Streets. It offers steam, sauna, showers, lockers, and a maze-like floor of bunk beds and play areas. Private sex rooms are illegal in San Francisco, so if you are looking for a little privacy, this is not the place for you–everything happens in the open. Busy right after work and as the bars begin to close. (Imagine that!)

    Mack Folsom Prison

Located right in the middle of the SOMA gay bars, this sex club is on the, well, rougher side, drawing a leather/levi crowd that makes the neighborhood popular. This is a small club, featuring two play lofts, and it has the unusual feature of computer terminals for online cruising for those times when the crowd gets a little slow.

Chow Down

San Francisco is reputation for fine dining, and you’d be hard pressed to find a restaurant without finding a same-sex couple holding hands or celebrating an anniversary. That said, if you want to indulge yourself with full-on culinary homosexuality, try these places. No pinching the wait staff and watch those carbs!

    Asia SF

    201 Ninth Street,
    San Francisco CA 94103

    415-255-2742

No, it’s not the Maury show, though the lovely ladies who serve you, are in fact, lusty lads in lingerie. Small plates of pan-Asian cuisine work well as a dinner or as finger food for the sightseeing voyeur who just has to have a drag queen sing "Big Spender" to him while doing high kicks.

    Home

    2100 Market
    San Francisco CA 94114

    415-503-0333

There’s lots of good American cooking going on at the former JohnFrank — creamy white bean soup with ham hocks, Niman Ranch pork tenderloin with tasso ham-infused grits, a marvelously comforting mascarpone pudding — as well as feathery gnocchi, silky ceviche, and a hearty shrimp risotto.

    Asia de Cuba

    495 Geary
    San Francisco CA 94102

    415-929-2300

Though its food doesn’t live up to that at similarly priced restaurants, Asia de Cuba offers tremendous portions and funky, elegant decor that make it worth a visit nonetheless. Among the starters, try the hulking oxtail spring rolls or the exquisite lobster pot stickers with lobster roe and vanilla-spiced rum sauces. Entrees are large enough to feed two and are meant to be shared; they include a garlicky palomillo of lamb and a good Hunan-style wok-crisped fish stuffed with crab.

NO Licenses marriages for same-sex couples

On Nov. 4, 2008, California voters approved Proposition 8,    which amends the state constitution to prohibit marriage by    same-sex couples.
